Here are the instructions to translate the Piwik.org into your language. Thank you for your interest and we are looking forward to reading your translations!
Make sure you have read the page Introduction to translators first.
We aim for high quality translations. You must be an active Piwik user, understand HTML, have read through the Piwik lang/xx.php language file at least once to reuse the same terms.
Some translators have also recommended to use Firefox browser as Chrome might have some incompatibility.
There are about 160 words and short sentences that are used throughout the website and it is best to start translating them.
Login with your translator account at piwik.org/wp-admin, then click on the left column “String translations”:
As you can see there are about 160 strings to translate.
To translate one word, click on “Translations” link. Write the translation for the word or expression, click “This translation is complete”, then click “Save“.
The new string will directly appear on the website at xx.piwik.org.
Repeat this process until all 170 strings are completed.
Congrats, now you have translated the common strings on the website! We can now start translating the real content of the pages themselves.
To start with, we would like to translate the following three pages:
To translate these pages, click on “Translation interface” in the left menu.
This is the translation queue. It lists all the pages and objects available to translate in your language. For example the “Homepage” is called “Free Web Analytics Software”.
To translate an item, click on “Edit” button. It will open the translation editor for this page.
A given page is made of several blocks. The translation editor page will let you translate all these blocks for one page.
For example, when editing the Download page there is the “download_description” block:
Translate the text, click “This translation is finished“.
Do the same for all texts on the page. Then click “Translation of this document is complete” and then click “Save Translation“.
Your page translation should now be published. Check it is working, and congratulations!
After you have translated the strings in “String Translations“, the remaining work is to translate the most useful pages of the website, so visitors can learn more about Piwik in your language. We will focus on translating only the pages that have the most traffic.
Click on “Translation interface“. For each item in the Translations queue, click on “Edit”, verify that the content is fully translated. Then click “Translation of this document is complete” and submit the document.
For example, this includes the four “Testimonials” displayed on the homepage, as well as other important items.
Here are the most important pages that will be available to translate in the “Translation Interface” menu:
Once a page is translated, the Top Menu and the Footer Menu on *.piwik.org will automatically link to the new pages you have translated.
After any page is translated, it will appear as “Complete” in the “Translation Interface” page:
When you have finished the translation of the website in your language, let us know, we would very happy to send you a Piwik Tshirt, the Piwik book as thank you for your amazing translation work! Also, we would like to add you as a “Website Translator” and add your name on the Piwik Team page.
After all pages are translated, the Top Menu and the Footer menu will have their labels replaced with the Page title you set in the translation. Please check that the translation is small enough to fit in the menu. Here is an example of a menu where translations are too long causing the menu to wrap:
After shortening the title of these two pages in French (‘Homepage’ and ‘Help’), the menu looks good:
