At first glance the Piwik settings might look a little bit daunting but they’re really easy to pick up. This video will give you a tour of the Piwik settings.
You can track multiple websites with Piwik; I’ll show you how to add one. Then I’ll show you add users so they can view your statistics, how to extend your tracking with plugins, how to protect your website visitors’ privacy, and finally, we’ll look at how to manage the size of your database. Let’s start by adding a website that we wish to analyze to Piwik. This can be done in just a few clicks.
At the top of your Dashboard, click on the All Websites link. You’ll land on a page that lists all of the websites that you’re tracking. Along with some basic data about them. Click on the Add New Website link. This table is where you will fill in your websites’ details. Add the website’s name, input all of the URLs you want to track. Exclude any IP addresses. You may want to exclude your own IP from being tracked. Or the IP of other people working on the site. If you wish, exclude any URL parameters. Add your timezone, and your currency. Tell Piwik if your site is an eCommerce site, so that eCommerce analytics can be added to your reports. Click save and then select added to your reports.
Click save and then select View Tracking Code to grab your JavaScript tracking code. This should be inserted just before your closing body tag. Or, if you’re using a content management system you could use a Drupal Module, Joomla! Extension or WordPress plugin.
Once your JavaScript tracking code is inserted in your website’s pages you’ll start getting real time web analytics with Piwik. Once you’ve added your websites, you can start adding users to Piwik, giving them permission to access your reports. To do this you need to log in as the Super User. The Super User is the account that you created when you installed Piwik. This account has the greatest control. Don’t lose the login details! Navigate to Settings and click on the Users tab. Click on the Add New User button. Fill in the user’s details, and save.
Once your user is created, it’s really simple to edit the user’s access. Select the website you want to give the user access to, or, all the websites if you like. And then click in the button with the type of access you want to grant. Admin permissions let users edit websites and give other users permissions. A user with admin permissions cannot add websites or manage plugins. View permissions let the user view all of the data and reports. View permissions let the user view all of the data and reports. but not have access to any admin permissions. Easy! We’ve even added an anonymous user so if you want to share your data with the world, you can do so.
At Piwik, we take privacy seriously. It’s important that people using the Internet have their privacy protected. That’s why we’ve given you additional options to increase your visitors’ privacy. Every country has its own privacy laws, if you’re required to you can anonymise your visitors’ IP addresses. You can automatically delete visitor logs. And you can also add our HTML snippet to your web page to let your visitors opt out of your analytics tracking. You may want to include this with your privacy policy. If the visitors chooses to opt out, a cookie will be set in their browser to prevent tracking.
If you find your Piwik installation becomes slow it may be because your database has become too big or overloaded. This is to be expected if you’re tracking your statistics over a long period of time. Especially if you have a high traffic website. To manage your database, click on the database settings link. Deleting old visitor logs can free significant space in your database. And improve Piwik performance. You can set Piwik up to do this automatically. You can also delete old reports automatically, which is great for users whose web hosts retrict their database size. When you select to delete old reports Piwik will give you an estimate of your current database size and the estimated size after the purge.
Plugins are used to extend Piwik’s core funcitonality. When you install and set up Piwik a number of plugins will be activated by default These include, the dashboard plugin our Feedback plugin, and the Live plugin. There are plugins that are deactivated by default. For example, you could use the SecurityInfo plugn to learn more about your web server and check that it’s secure. You can install and develop your own plugins. Check out the Piwik website for more info!
Our general settings let you fine tune Piwik to your own preferences. If you have a high traffic website for example, you may want to disable browser triggered archiving. Or, reduce the frequency at which reports are processed. You can use an SMTP mail server instead of your local mail functions for sending Piwik emails. If you’re having trouble sending reports you may find this useful.
Also, it’s easy to rebrand Piwik, replacing the default logo with your own logo, to keep your analytics seamless with the rest of your branding. Now that you know your way around Piwik settings you should be able to customize Piwik to act the way you want it to.
